We started this foundation on 14 August 2018 with a commitment to bridging menstrual hygiene gaps.
Those who menstruate and belong to unprivileged sections often suffer the most. A lot of times it is due to lack of sanitary products. It is shocking that while India is home to approximately 355 million menstruators, only 12% have access to hygienic sanitary supplies!
Our goal is to increase access to such products for improving menstrual hygiene.
So, what motivated us to start the foundation? It was on account of a few personal experiences.
Young girls wanted to wash and re-use sanitary napkins found in a dust bin. A woman confessed that she forced her daughters to stay home and use rags during their cycles. She couldn't afford sanitary pads. These incidents indicated that poor hygiene during the menstrual cycle is a huge crisis in India. It needed intervention at the grassroots level.
So, we decided to be part of the solution to address menstrual challenges comprehensively.
We want to bring in a change and increase access to sanitary supplies.
Go Hygiene Foundation is on a mission to address menstrual hygiene issues at its roots to leave a stronger impact on the lives of girls and women.
To Live and let live
To create a healthy woman to lead a happy life
To create awareness among the girls with respect to the usage of Sanitary Napkins
Our vision is to make sure that no one (including non-binaries) suffers due to a lack of sanitary hygiene products. We believe that by increasing awareness about the need for these products and facilitating easier access to them, we will be able to truly empower all women.
“The difference that we make to the lives around us defines a life well-lived.”
Mrs U Suman Latha Metha is the Founder and driving force behind the Go Hygiene Foundation. She was born in Bangalore, where she attended school and obtained a B. Com degree from BMS college. She moved to Chennai in 1986 after her marriage. She has always demonstrated a deep passion and empathy about furthering various social causes and uplifting those around her.
Over the years of working right at the grassroots level, she realized the urgent need to amplify a neglected issue faced by several adolescent young girls and women across India belonging to marginalized backgrounds: the lack of easy access to sanitary supplies. She also realized that the root cause was low awareness about sanitary hygiene due to poor literacy rates.
This led to the birth of the Go Hygiene Foundation -- an organization that she has been spearheading for the last two years to provide equitable access to sanitary supplies to those who menstruate and give them the dignity they deserve.
She wants to cut across the social barriers of caste, religion, creed to empower women and young girls to be self-reliant and uplift each other. Through her enterprising spirit and tireless efforts for spreading awareness about menstrual hygiene and shunning the stigma, the foundation is committed to make a pan India impact.
Her efforts have been recognized by various reputed institutions such as the Rotary Club, Duchess Club, Rajasthan Cosmo Club, and Jagruti Club, Chennai. She has also been interviewed by electronic media.
She takes an active interest in astrology, palmistry, and numerology. She has even obtained a Diploma in Astrology and Vaastu. In her leisure time, she enjoys singing.
